We're going on a shade hunt

Help pupils understand the importance of staying out of the sun during hot parts of the day by going on a shade hunt.

a) Ask the class why we need to be careful in the sun. Discuss how we can stay safe from the sun outdoors during playtime by finding shade.

b) Walk around the playground and outside areas of the school and count how many shady places there are.

c) Talk about whether they are good places to be on a sunny playtime. Discuss what shadows are and how shadows move during the day because the world spins around.

d) Pupils can complete the ‘We’re going on a shade hunt’ activity sheet to apply what they have learnt about sun safety.
