Using the worksheet:

a) Tell the students about the famous novel Robinson Crusoe and how the story is based on a true account of a sailor who survived on an uninhabited island after being shipwrecked. Students may also have seen survival TV shows or the film Cast Away.

b) Briefly discuss the essentials of survival: water, food, shelter, warmth.

c) Show some graphic novel pages to the students so that they can see how the story is told in comic book style pictures. Artists often use close ups. The task is to create one page showing how ‘Robertson’ Crusoe makes a shelter for protection from the sun and rain.
