Download Shelters activity sheet to find ideas for building shelters and for images of different kinds of shelters around the world.

a) Split the class into groups of four and challenge them to build outdoor shelters using the materials provided.

b) For those who need support, a simple ‘wigwam’ arrangement of canes (joined by rubber bands) can work well. The sheet can then be pegged to the canes. There are other ideas in the Shelters activity sheet.

c) Talk about what worked well and why. How were problems overcome?

d) Discuss why sheltering from the sun is important. How do people around the world find shelter? Create a list of different types of shelter. See Shelters activity sheet for images.

e) What can we use if shelter is limited? (Sun cream, hats, suitable clothes).
